FUMC makes eyes 'SMILE' again

Fatima University Medical Center (FUMC), the country’s trusted leader in eye care, recently announced the integration of its cutting-edge ZEISS SMILE pro technology, ushering in fast and reliable treatment for patients with vision problems.

According to a 2021 study, vision impairment and blindness in the Philippines have a prevalence rate of 1.98 percent — representing approximately 1.11 million Filipinos with cataracts, around 400,000 with uncorrected refractive errors, nearly 300,000 with glaucoma, and about 200,000 with maculopathy or diabetic retinopathy.

FUMC is addressing these issues with a minimally invasive and painless procedure called SMILE, or Small Incision Lenticule Extraction.

ZEISS SMILE pro is an advanced laser vision correction technique performed using the German-engineered VISUMAX 800. It involves creating a small incision and removing a lenticule — a contact lens-shaped layer beneath the surface of the eye — to reshape the cornea and correct vision.

As a flapless and minimally invasive procedure, SMILE offers a quick recovery time, providing patients with a revolutionary alternative to eyeglasses or contact lenses.

FUMC has long been at the forefront of eye care in the Philippines. With the integration of ZEISS SMILE pro, the hospital continues to transform lives by combining medical expertise with the latest advancements in vision correction.

The ZEISS SMILE pro procedure is designed to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. By using the advanced Zeiss VISUMAX 800 femtosecond laser, the cornea is reshaped with a tiny incision that maintains its biomechanical stability — helping preserve corneal integrity and minimizing post-operative dry eye.

Laser ablation with the SMILE pro takes just nine seconds, significantly faster than previous versions of the technology. This enhances patient comfort, improves procedural efficiency, and allows for rapid recovery.

"Our integration of Zeiss SMILE pro underscores our dedication to pioneering the future of laser vision correction in the Philippines, providing Filipinos with the latest technology available, complemented by our caring and professional medical experts and staff," said Dr. Vicente Santos, president of Fatima University Medical Center.

"FUMC has a long and successful track record of achieving outstanding results for our eye care patients, and this latest advancement further solidifies our commitment to healthcare excellence."
