From setback to solidarity

A stirring narrative unfolded during the 2025 local elections in Cebu City, revealing not just the triumphs and defeats of political campaigns but giving a raw glimpse into the realities of everyday life for many residents.

While campaign slogans and colorful posters adorned the streets, the unsettling truth about the untold stories of hardship and resilience remained beyond the spotlight, overshadowed by proclamations of victory.

I vowed to uplift the downtrodden and address the pressing issues faced by Cebuanos. Committed to ethical governance, I positioned myself as a champion of the underserved, promising to dedicate my time to improving their condition, especially in the impoverished barangays.

Walking through several communities painted a vivid picture of life in the poorer parts of Cebu.

In one sitio, floodwaters had taken up permanent residence, stagnating for eight long years. The sight was shocking: homes surrounded by murky water and families navigating difficult circumstances that seemed to have no end.

It was a sad scene I witnessed, and in my heart, I recognized that these issues were not just campaign talking points — they were the lived realities of my fellow Cebuanos.

Many are living in squalor, many are living with no access to potable water. The weight of these truths and the depth of the struggles faced by the people became not only a catalyst for my campaign but also a personal mission.

I have been longing for a new paradigm in leadership — one that values ethical governance over the all-too-common practice of transactional politics. So, I offered myself to the Cebuanos.

But alas, as the final votes were counted, it became clear that the journey would be different than anticipated. Despite the setback, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the voters. I played by the rules; I wanted to give Cebu City a chance to experience principled leadership.

The results indicated that the community may be unprepared for the change I wanted to introduce. Nevertheless, a new phase in public service began — not defined by political success, but by a deep commitment to continue advocating for those in need.

I accepted the outcome like a humbled, defeated man. The lessons learned during the campaign will inspire me to rise again. Progress takes time and a collective effort — even when immediate results are absent.

And so, the story of Yogi the “probinsyano” extends beyond politics; it should serve as a rallying call for compassion and action within the community. Cebuanos began to ask: How can we come together to make a difference?

The struggle of the everyday Cebuanos, facing immense challenges, has not gone unnoticed. There is an emerging understanding that it is not enough to wish for change; collective action is essential. To the victors, count me in, as long as everything is aboveboard and for the people.

With renewed focus, the goal should be to empower communities, advocate for necessary resources, and raise awareness of the socio-economic challenges that plague many barangays.

The commitment to serve amid adversity should exemplify the spirit of Cebu, where individuals refuse to disregard their neighbors’ plight.

I hope efforts to uplift these communities will continue in the coming years, and the energy to create positive change in Cebu may finally coalesce.

Cebu’s heart beats with its people’s vibrant hopes and dreams. They strive for a better future through resilience when given what they need.
