Brasília, Brazil — Nine people died and 10 were injured when a truck and minivan collided head-on in Minas Gerais state in southeastern Brazil, local firefighters said Wednesday.
Rescuers found injured people trapped between the two vehicles when they arrived at the scene, Lieutenant Kollek Pereira da Silva said in a video distributed to media. A minor was among those killed, all of them in the minivan.
Police were working to determine the cause of the crash, which took place late Tuesday near Barrocao, a community about 500 kilometers (310 miles) from the state capital Belo Horizonte.
The truck was not carrying cargo; its driver and one passenger suffered only minor injuries, officials said. Eight injured minivan passengers were rushed to hospital.
Road accidents are common in Brazil. Eleven people died and 17 were hospitalized in a bus accident in Minas Gerais in April, while 12 university students were killed in a crash in Sao Paulo state in February.
