After nearly three decades at the helm, De La Salle University head coach Ramil de Jesus continues to define success in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s volleyball — not just with wins and titles, but with a philosophy rooted in passion and purpose.
As La Salle gears up for their 21st UAAP Finals appearance under his leadership in Season 87, De Jesus remains the standard of excellence in collegiate coaching.
In 28 years, he has guided the Lady Spikers to 12 championships and boasts an unmatched record of 321 wins against just 90 losses.
But for de Jesus, the secret to La Salle’s consistency isn’t found in statistics — it lies in his mindset.
“It’s really just hard work because this is my passion as a coach. To be able to teach these young athletes, help them succeed, and bring out their true talent — that’s what drives me,” De Jesus said.
“There’s a huge sense of fulfillment in seeing your players reach the finals. That’s what keeps me motivated to keep helping them and teaching them what they need to learn.”
The Lady Spikers’ return to the Finals comes with a poetic twist. Standing in their way is the very team that handed them a painful defeat in Season 86 — National University. This year’s title showdown is expected to be a tactical and emotional battle, with both squads boasting experience and depth. Even rival coaches have taken notice of the evenly matched clash.
“Although NU was more consistent in the eliminations, both teams have the potential to be champions,” Ateneo head coach Sergio Veloso said in an interview with the DAILY TRIBUNE.
“I think the team that can apply more pressure with their serve and disrupt the opponent’s first ball, lowering their sideout efficiency, will come out on top.”
Whether it’s another title or another hard-fought run, De Jesus’ legacy is already carved into UAAP history.
But for the legendary coach, every season is a new opportunity — not to chase records, but to shape futures.
