Authorities reported that a six-vehicle collision along Fortune Avenue in Marikina City on Wednesday night killed three people and injured 10 others.

The Marikina City Police Station disclosed that the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. in Barangay Fortune when a trailer truck lost control while going up an incline.

Initial investigations also showed that the truck rolled backward, causing its container to overturn and crush a jeepney, a green car, and a Hyundai. The sudden movement triggered a chain-reaction collision involving two additional vehicles, according to the report.

Dave David, chief of the Marikina Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, confirmed the fatalities and injuries in a radio interview.

He said the victims were taken to Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center in Marikina City. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.

The trailer truck driver is in police custody and is expected to face inquest proceedings for multiple homicide, multiple physical injuries and multiple damage to property.

David said initial investigations indicated the 40-foot trailer truck was ascending a steep part of the road when it apparently lost power, rolled backward, and overturned, hitting the vehicles behind it.

Rescue and retrieval operations were complicated, particularly for the driver of the jeepney, who was trapped under the overturned truck, according to the Marikina Bureau of Fire Protection.

Several survivors recounted the chaotic scene.

One motorist, identified as Roger Cadigoy, said he saw the container van stop before it began reversing rapidly, leading to a series of collisions.

Another motorist identified as Ryan Moral said he had to swerve to avoid the full impact of the crash and was fortunate to survive.

Local government personnel conducted cleanup operations to reopen the road.
