In a powerful display of marine conservation and environmental protection, the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) and Joint Task Force (JTF)–Poseidon, in partnership with the local government unit (LGU) of Turtle Islands, released 500 sea turtle hatchlings into the sea on the pristine shores of Baguan Island.

The activity, which took place on Wednesday, also included a coastal clean-up drive targeting ecologically sensitive areas of Baguan Island, a critical nesting site for endangered green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas).

“This is more than a symbolic act — it’s part of our broader commitment to environmental security,” said Rear Admiral Francisco G. Tagamolila Jr., commander of NFWM. “Protecting our marine ecosystems is integral to the mission of the Philippine Navy.”

Turtle Islands Mayor Hji Mohammad Faizal H. Jamalul said the event reflects the collaborative commitment to safeguard the rich biodiversity of the region.

“We are proud to be part of this initiative,” Jamalul said. “The protection of our natural heritage is a shared responsibility, and we are grateful to the Philippine Navy and MENRE-BARMM for their continued support in preserving the unique environment of the Turtle Islands.”

The clean-up effort was joined by volunteers from the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Energy-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, along with Philippine Navy personnel, LGU staff and local residents. Together, they collected marine debris and plastic waste that threaten the nesting grounds and marine life in the area.

Baguan Island, part of the Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary, is a protected area known as one of the most important nesting sites for sea turtles in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

The release of the 500 hatchlings was not only a conservation effort but also a call to action. “It symbolizes hope for the future of these endangered species and highlights the need for continued preservation efforts, especially in these remote and ecologically vital areas,” Jamalul said.

Rear Admiral Tagamolila added that the NFWM, through JTF-Poseidon, will continue to integrate environmental protection into its mission, stressing that “the security of our natural resources is deeply connected to the long-term safety and sustainability of our nation.”
