Former senator and senatorial candidate Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan has voiced strong opposition to recent discussions suggesting that the tax privileges of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) could be suspended in response to their political opinions.

In a statement, Pangilinan emphasized the importance of protecting the constitutional rights of OFWs, calling any attempt to silence them through legislative threats “deeply unjust.”

“OFWs are the backbone of our economy. Their hard work and sacrifices, often made at the cost of being away from their loved ones, contribute significantly to keeping the Philippine economy afloat,” he said. “To threaten them with the removal of their hard-earned privileges simply for exercising their right to free expression is wrong and deeply unjust.”

Pangilinan warned against eroding civil liberties, noting that freedom of speech is a fundamental right protected by the Constitution. He said using legislative threats to curb dissent sets a dangerous precedent that could be abused under future leadership.

“As a democracy, we value free expression, and open dialogue has always been a cornerstone of good governance. Rather than discouraging discussions, we should welcome the perspectives of our OFWs, as they provide valuable insights into the realities faced by millions of Filipinos abroad. Their voices should be heard, not silenced,” he said.

He stressed that OFWs provide vital insights into the realities faced by millions of Filipinos abroad and should be treated with respect, not intimidation.

“Our OFWs deserve respect and gratitude — not intimidation,” Pangilinan added.

He urged the government to focus instead on strengthening support systems for OFWs, ensuring they continue to receive the protection and recognition they deserve.
