Letran College did the unthinkable as it snapped the 43-game winning streak of defending champion College of Saint Benilde with a 25-22, 25-23, 26-24 victory in Season 100 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Lyceum of the Philippines University Gymnasium.
Nizelle Martin led the Lady Knights with 19 points as they avenged their loss from last year’s finals.
The last time the Lady Blazers lost an NCAA game was in a do-or-die semifinal match in 2019 where they absorbed a 17-25, 29-27, 25-19, 24-26, 14-16 defeat against University of Perpetual Help System Dalta.
Letran head coach Oliver Almadro said he saw the fire in the players’ eyes as they were determined to pull off the upset.
“They refused to lose. They really want to win so who am I to prevent it?” Almadro said.
“What’s important is we know that we can win some games and we do really hope this reflects on our future wins.”
Sheena Vanessa scored 15 points built on 12 attacks and three aces for the Lady Knights, who now have a 3-0 win-loss record.
Wielyn Estoque was the only Lady Blazer to reach double digits with 13 points.
