The local government of Navotas City drew different feedback on social media after posting a P120 salary for three hours of work as a street sweeper.
In a now-deleted Facebook post that earned at least 5,000 reactions, the Navotas City LGU shared that they are currently hiring clerks and street sweepers.
There are no specific qualification standards for interested applicants, who will be assigned to Barangay Tangos North and Barangay Tangos South.
“Report to the assigned area of work at the time designated by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO).”
“Clean the assigned area and keep the same clean for the duration of the daily work assignment,” the local government of Navotas stated in its post.
They also added that workers will be assigned the “equivalent of one to three eskinitas within the barangay where he/she lives.”
Numerous netizens slammed the post, lamenting the low wage, which doesn’t reach the minimum wage in the National Capital Region.
“Parang mas malaki pa yung pasahod sa Tupad. 120 pesos a day? This is not makatarungan.”
"It seems that the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) salary is even higher. ₱120 a day? This isn’t fair," a netizen commented.
The approved minimum wage in the National Capital Region (NCR) is P645, up from P610.
The hourly wage of a minimum wage earner in NCR is ₱80.63, whereas a Navotas street sweeper earns only ₱40 per hour.
The local government replied to some inquiries in the comment section of the post, emphasizing the benefits for the street sweepers and the equipment that the local government will provide.
Accepted street sweepers will be paid an overtime fee and will be given Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) Accident Insurance Pay, with a maximum amount of P100,000.
Among the pieces of equipment that the government will provide are trash bins, brooms, raincoats, work boots, and trash bags.
As of writing, there have been no statements from Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco to address the salary issue.
