"I wouldn't be standing here today if I hadn't forgiven myself," actress Katrina Halili declared in a recent interview. Speaking alongside her co-star Camille Prats for their upcoming GMA Afternoon Prime series Mommy Dearest, Halili opened up about her past struggles and the journey to self-acceptance.
Halili's career has been marked by both triumphs and tribulations. She first gained prominence as a finalist on the reality talent search StarStruck in 2003, launching her into the world of showbiz. She quickly became a household name, known for her captivating performances in dramas like Darna (2005 & 2009), Majika (2006) and Marimar (2007). Her talent and beauty also led her to be named FHM Philippines' World's Sexiest Woman twice, in 2006 and 2008, a first for any Filipina.
However, Halili's personal life has also faced public scrutiny. She navigated a highly publicized controversy in 2009, and later, another challenging period following her separation from Kris Lawrence, the father of her child. In the interview, Halili addressed these past struggles with remarkable candor. "Actually, I have shortcomings towards myself," she admitted. "I don't have to apologize to anyone else. It's like I wronged myself, right? If there's anyone I need to ask for forgiveness from, it's God."
Mommy Dearest marks a reunion for Halili and Camille Prats, whose bond extends beyond their shared profession. Both women have experienced the loss of loved ones. Prats' first husband, Anthony Linsangan, passed away in 2011, a time when she was working with Halili on the show Munting Heredera. Tragically, Halili recently lost her boyfriend in 2024, during the taping of Mommy Dearest.
Prats reflected on their unique connection, saying, "When I lost my first husband, I was working with her during Munting Heredera. So, somehow, she witnessed that season of my life. And then, now, it's been a long time since we worked together, and now with 'Mommy Dearest,' she's going through her own experience while we were taping. So, somehow, my relationship with Kath, especially as co-workers, it's like a 360 degrees. She saw me at my lowest, she witnessed that. And at the same time, I'm here in her life now while she was going through that."
Halili echoed this sentiment, emphasizing their shared strength and resilience. "That's what we talked about, 'Mars, we accept it, right?'" she shared. "But there are others who don't, who won't accept it, who don't want to yet. But we both accept it." She also revealed her approach to coping with grief while working: "I said, 'Yes, because I can cry later.' Yes, after taping, that's how I am. For example, during a take, I'll hold it back until we pack up, then I'll cry."
Despite the challenges she has faced, Halili's career continues to thrive. Her powerful portrayals in dramas like Destiny Rose (2015), Sa Piling ni Nanay (2016), The Stepdaughters (2018) and Prima Donnas (2019) have solidified her status as a leading actress, often recognized for her compelling antagonist roles. In 2024, she achieved international acclaim, winning Best Supporting Actress at the Emirates Film Festival for her performance in AbeNida (2023).
Katrina Halili's story is one of resilience, forgiveness, and the enduring power of the human spirit. She has navigated personal storms with grace and strength, emerging stronger and more determined than ever. As she continues to captivate audiences with her talent and authenticity, her journey serves as an inspiration to many.
