The air crackled with excitement as the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) hosted its annual Chinese New Year Dinner Reception and Special Awards Ceremony. Held on 29 January at the opulent Golden Bay Seafood Restaurant in Pasay City, the event was a vibrant celebration of Lunar New Year traditions, a recognition of outstanding Filipinos, and a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Philippines-China diplomatic relations.
Under the auspices of the Year of the Snake, a symbol of wisdom, grace, and independence, the evening saw the honoring of seven luminaries who have made significant contributions to Philippine society.
Among the esteemed awardees was former First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos, recognized for her pivotal role in establishing diplomatic relations with China during her husband’s presidency. Senator Imee Marcos, her daughter, accepted the award on her behalf, delivering an inspiring speech that emphasized the enduring strength of the Philippines-China relationship.
Ricky Lee, National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts and renowned screenwriter, was also honored for his significant contributions to Philippine cinema and literature. Lee, whose late father was Secretary General of the Camarines Norte Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce, recently won the MMFF Best Screenplay award for his film Green Bones, a title that, coincidentally, draws inspiration from a Chinese belief signifying goodness in the departed.
The evening also celebrated the achievements of Jessica Soho, a renowned journalist known for her integrity and excellence; Michelle Dee, a beauty queen and advocate for autism awareness; Jose Mari Chan, the beloved singer-songwriter; Kenneth Cobonpue, a globally recognized industrial designer; and many others.
Beyond the awards ceremony, the event served as a platform to celebrate the rich tapestry of Chinese Filipino culture. The Lunar New Year, now a globally recognized holiday, underscores the interconnectedness of cultures and the importance of fostering understanding and cooperation. The FFCCCII, an umbrella organization representing over 170 Chinese Filipino chambers of commerce nationwide, has long played a vital role in promoting socio-civic initiatives, supporting economic growth, and strengthening ties between the Philippines and China.
As the nation prepares to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations with China, the FFCCCII’s Chinese New Year celebration served as a timely reminder of the enduring strength of this partnership and the shared values that bind the two nations together. The event was not just a celebration of Chinese heritage but a testament to the vibrant and diverse tapestry of Filipino culture.
