Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna led the opening of the 2025 Chinese New Year festivities on Friday night with the lighting of the Prosperity Tree at Binondo Square, Manila.

In her speech, Lacuna emphasized the significance of Manila Chinatown as a premier tourist destination and its vital role in the city’s heritage.

“A visit to the capital city wouldn't be complete without an authentic encounter with the places and faces in Manila Chinatown," she said.

She also highlighted Chinatown's historical and cultural contributions.

"For over 430 years, Chinatown has become a significant part of our culture. Through the centuries, this place has been the symbol of unity and cooperation among our Filipino-Chinese friends and has shown much influence, especially in the capital city’s character, economy, trade, and industry,” she added.

Lacuna described the Prosperity Tree as a unique work of contemporary art representing hope, luck, and blessings for the new year.

“It’s not just an ordinary tree, but a contemporary art piece that represents hope, luck, and blessings for the new year. The Prosperity lighting ceremony will also symbolize the abundant contribution of Manila Chinatown to our city, and the bright daylight represents the bright future ahead of the century tied together and gone through,” she continued.

The celebration featured a vibrant fireworks display and dragon dances to mark the start of the five-day Chinese New Year festivities, symbolizing prosperity and hope for a successful 2025 economy.

Lacuna was joined by Vice Mayor Yul Servo, District 3 Congressman Joel Chua, Department of Tourism Assistant Secretary Sharlene Zabal-Batin, Chinatown officials, and representatives from major Chinese business groups.
