Personnel from the Manila Police District’s (MPD) Sta. Cruz Police Station conducted over the weekend an Oplan Galugad operation inside Manila North Cemetery to check for criminals and other suspicious individuals ahead of Undas.

Police searched alleys and dimly lit areas of the public cemetery a week before the annual observance, when thousands of people are expected to visit the graves of their loved ones.

P/Lt. Col. Jolly Soriano, Station 3 commander, said about 40 individuals found inside the cemetery were brought to the main road for verification by police personnel to determine whether they had outstanding arrest warrants.

“We invited around 40 individuals who are now being checked with the help of our warrant personnel to determine whether they have warrants of arrest. During the operation, they were found inside the cemetery, and we are checking their activities and why they were there at that hour,” Soriano said.

Police also conducted a separate Oplan Galugad operation in nearby Tondo, where officers found individuals drinking alcohol in alleys, in violation of a city ordinance.

One individual brought his jug of gin to the police station and joked that he did not want to throw away the remaining liquor.

“My companion brought it along because it would be a waste. We won’t do it again. Next time, we’ll drink inside. We just started. It’s only to help us sleep,” he said.

About 20 individuals were apprehended during the operation outside the cemetery and issued tickets for violating a city ordinance.
