GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Sarangani has officially attained the status of a first-class province, effective 1 January.

This historic achievement follows the enactment of Republic Act 11964, authored by Sarangani Rep. Steve Solon, and was confirmed by the Department of Finance (DoF) through Department Order No. 074-2024.

Sarangani’s elevation to first-class status is based on the “Automatic Income Classification of Local Government Units Act,” which mandates an average annual regular income of at least P1.5 billion over the past three fiscal years.

The province successfully met this requirement, thanks to the collective efforts of its provincial government and the active participation of its seven local government units (LGUs): Alabel, Glan, Malapatan, Maasim, Kiamba, Maitum and Malungon.

Governor Rogelio D. Pacquiao attributed this achievement to the province’s unified leadership and its focused initiatives in key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, trade, and infrastructure development. These efforts not only spurred local economic growth but also enhanced governance and resource management across Sarangani.

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our officials, stakeholders, and citizens. Together, we are building a brighter future for the people of Sarangani,” Pacquiao remarked.

With this new classification, Sarangani stands to benefit from enhanced opportunities, improved services and increased access to funding, all of which will support sustainable development and progress for its communities.
