GENERAL SANTOS CITY — A barangay chairman was gunned down in his home on Friday, 3 January in the municipality of Datu Salibo, Maguindanao del Sur. The victim has been identified as Barangay Sambowalay chairman Kameran M. Abubakar.
Initial reports from local authorities indicate that unidentified assailants attacked Abubakar while he was inside his residence. He was shot multiple times in various parts of his body. Neighbors reported hearing gunfire, but the suspects had fled the scene by the time help arrived.
Chairman Abubakar was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival due to the severity of his injuries.
Police officials have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the killing and to identify the perpetrators. Authorities have yet to provide further details about possible leads or suspects.
Residents of Barangay Sambowalay have expressed shock and grief over the incident. Community members described the late chairman as a dedicated leader who worked tirelessly for the welfare of his constituents.
“He was a kind and hardworking man. We are devastated by his untimely death,” one resident said.
Maguindanao del Sur has experienced a number of violent incidents in recent years, often linked to political rivalries and clan feuds, locally known as “rido.” However, it remains unclear whether Abubakar’s killing is connected to such disputes.
Authorities have called on anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation. Meanwhile, additional security measures are being implemented in the area to ensure the safety of residents and prevent further violence.
This incident adds to the growing concern over the safety of local officials in conflict-prone areas of the region. Community leaders are urging law enforcement agencies to expedite the investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
