The remains of a Filipino chief engineer killed in an incident in the Strait of Hormuz were repatriated to the Philippines on Tuesday, as government agencies also welcomed eight deported overseas Filipino workers (OFW) returning from Russia on Wednesday.

The remains of the chief engineer, who served aboard the M/V Minoan Dignity, arrived from Oman at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 aboard Oman Air flight WY843.

Officials from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and representatives from the seafarer’s licensed manning agency received the casket at the cargo terminal to facilitate its turnover and transport to the surviving family.

OWWA officials said the agency is extending financial, psycho-social, and administrative assistance to the grieving family to cover immediate needs following the worker’s death.

Separately, eight overseas Filipino workers arrived at NAIA Terminal 3 on Wednesday aboard Air China flight CA179 from Beijing following their deportation from Yakutsk, Russia.

Personnel from the Philippine Embassy in Moscow visited the workers at a temporary detention facility in Yakutsk on 31 August to verify their condition prior to departure.

The Russian government funded the returning workers’ airfare back to Manila.

Upon arrival, OWWA and DMW officers provided post-repatriation support, including airport reception, temporary shelter, travel allowances and domestic transportation to their respective home provinces.

The joint repatriation effort was coordinated through DMW, OWWA, the Philippine Embassy in Moscow and the Migrant Workers Office in Berlin.
