President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. paid tribute to former United States President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Monday, 30 December, at the age of 100.

Marcos described the former US leader as a “humanitarian who practiced what he preached: Houses for the homeless and human rights for the oppressed.”

“Guided by his faith, he was a servant leader who pursued peace in places torn by war and prosperity in societies broken by want,” he said.

Marcos emphasized the universal values that Carter fought for, which are embraced by people everywhere, including Filipinos. According to Marcos, these values serve as the cornerstone of a better, kinder society they deserve to live in.

“He was a model of the power to do good, with the benefit of public office or bereft of it, driven, not by politics nor personal gain, but by pure love to one’s fellowmen,” Marcos added.

Jimmy Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He was also a former Democratic Governor and Senator of the State of Georgia.

Before his political career, Carter served in the United States Navy and fought in the Second World War.
