Joshua Munzon came up during crunch time to power NorthPort past TNT, 100-95, for its fourth straight win in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup last Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
With the Batang Pier holding on to a 97-95 lead with 1:28 left in the fourth quarter, Munzon buried a dagger triple to give them some breathing room.
NorthPort then locked down on defense as the Tropang Giga struggled to score a basket with less than a minute left on the clock.
Four-point shot attempts from Calvin Oftana and Rey Nambatac in the dying seconds did not go as the Batang Pier kept their slate intact.
The 29-year-old guard said he was just repaying the team’s trust on him whenever he was open for the shot.
“We all believe in each other. I’m thankful that my teammates found me and I was happy to come through for them,” Munzon said.
“The play wasn’t even for me but they found me open. I’m confident about my shots going in so I was happy it went in.”
Import Kadeem Jack had a double-double game of 27 points and 11 rebounds while Arvin Tolentino also had a double-double of his own — 17 points and 11 boards — for NorthPort to go with six assists, three steals and three blocks.
Calvin Oftana led TNT, firing 20 points and nine rebounds as the Tropang Giga sank to a 0-2 hole.
Resident import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had a double-double game of 19 points and 14 rebounds but had a bad shooting night after going 5-of-19 from the field for the Tropang Giga.
TNT played without Poy Erram as he was serving his one-game suspension after being slapped with a flagrant foul 2 in their 84-105 loss to Hong Kong Eastern last Friday.
Erram was also fined P20,000 apart from missing the Tropang Giga’s game against NorthPort.
