Okada Manila, a Forbes 5-star destination in the Philippines, has been recognized for its outstanding contributions to public health by the Department of Health (DOH). The integrated resort received the prestigious Gawad Antonio Luna Award at the Dugong Bayani Awards 2024, an honor that celebrates exceptional efforts in saving lives and promoting voluntary blood donation.
This award underscores Okada Manila’s unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of voluntary blood donation and supporting the government’s initiative to provide safe, equitable, and affordable blood supplies across the country. Through its consistent blood donation efforts, Okada Manila has helped ensure that those in need have access to vital resources in emergencies.
In 2024, Okada Manila further solidified its dedication to this life-saving cause by hosting two major blood donation drives. The first event, held in July, saw an impressive turnout, with 220 successful donors contributing to the Philippine Blood Center (PBC). The second drive, in October, brought in 162 blood units. Both events were meticulously organized, with a strong emphasis on donor safety and comfort, from thorough medical screenings to post-donation care.
Okada Manila is the only integrated resort in the Philippines to receive such an award for its significant contributions to the Non-Remunerated Voluntary Blood Program (NRVBP). From January 2020 to December 2023, the resort donated between 300 and 599 blood units, and its combined efforts since 2022 have led to the collection of 800 blood units. This achievement is part of the resort’s broader commitment under the Okada Green Heart program, which focuses on wellness, empowerment, and supporting both the workforce and the surrounding community.
The blood donations provided by Okada Manila benefit not only the general public but also the company’s employees and their families. This ensures that the resort is equipped to handle emergencies with a reliable supply of blood at its disposal. The consistent collection and distribution of blood units have also helped foster a sense of teamwork and shared responsibility, contributing to Okada Manila’s reputation as a leader in corporate social responsibility.
Byron Yip, President and Chief Operating Officer of Okada Manila, expressed his gratitude upon receiving the award. "Our commitment to saving lives through voluntary blood donation is a cause we champion under the Talent and Community pillar of the Okada Green Heart program," said Yip. "This effort not only supports the communities served by the Philippine Blood Center but also provides essential assistance to our own team members in times of need. We are deeply honored by this recognition from the DOH and will continue to encourage blood donation as part of our mission to make a meaningful impact."
The Philippine Blood Center (PBC), which operates under the DOH’s National Voluntary Blood Services Program, plays a vital role in ensuring that safe blood supplies are available across the country. The partnership between Okada Manila and the PBC highlights the importance of collaboration in achieving a healthier and more compassionate society.
This award marks another significant achievement for Okada Manila, reaffirming its role not just as a leader in the hospitality industry, but also as a responsible corporate citizen dedicated to improving public health. By blending operational excellence with a strong commitment to humanitarian service, Okada Manila continues to set the standard for corporate social responsibility, inspiring others to follow suit in making a positive difference in the lives of Filipinos.
As Okada Manila looks to the future, its focus remains on encouraging greater participation in life-saving efforts, creating a lasting impact in the communities it serves, and reinforcing the values of generosity, collaboration, and service. Through initiatives like these, Okada Manila is proving that corporate responsibility extends far beyond the business world and into the heart of society.
