With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of DAILY TRIBUNE columnist Macabangkit B. Lanto, a prominent figure in Philippine law and politics, who passed away on 15 October at the age of 81.

Born in 1942 in Lanao del Sur, Lanto dedicated much of his life to public service.

A lawyer by profession, Lanto served as a respected figure in government, holding various key positions, including as former Ambassador to Egypt and Sudan. He was also a Commissioner of the Commission on Elections and a member of the Philippine Constitutional Commission, which crafted the 1987 Constitution.

Known for his integrity and dedication, Lanto championed the rights of marginalized groups, particularly the Muslim community.

Lanto's contributions extended beyond government service, as he was a mentor to many in the legal profession and an advocate for peace and development specifically in Mindanao. His wisdom, humility and unwavering commitment to justice will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his loving family, friends and colleagues who will continue to honor his legacy.
