Philippine National Police chief Police General Benjamin Acorda Jr. on Tuesday reiterated that police force's commitment to provide security and safeguard all journalists and media practitioners.
This as he strongly condemned the heinous murder of radio anchor Juan Jumalon, popularly known as DJ Johnny Walker, in Calamba, Misamis Occidental recently.
Acorda said the PNP will continue to work tirelessly to create an environment in which journalists can fulfill their vital role in society without fear of violence or intimidation.
"We implore the community to join forces with us in our pursuit of justice for Juan Jumalon. Your cooperation and support are invaluable in solving this crime and ensuring the safety of our society," Acorda said.
He stressed that the media is the purveyor of truth.
"When the people are quiet about corruption, nothing will happen in our country and with that premise, the media and the police under my leadership are really needed," Acorda said.
"That is really what we are focusing on and all I want is to open our communication with the media so that if there is something that we feel, let us talk, sit down and how we can arrange for the safety and security so that the truth and corruption will continue to be revealed," he added.
In other developments, the United States Embassy in the country has also condemned the brutal slay of Jumalon.
"The US Embassy condemns in the strongest terms the brazen murder of Juan "DJ Johnny Walker" Jumalon. We welcome the swift steps taken by President Marcos, Secretary Abalos, and Philippine law enforcement authorities to solve this crime and bring the perpetrators to justice," said the US Embassy.
