The Philippines has offered its assistance to Morocco following the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on Friday night, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Tuesday, 12 September.
In his official social media account, Marcos Jr. has expressed his condolences to the people of Morocco after the earthquake claimed over 2,000 lives and injured thousands more.
"The Filipino people are deeply saddened to learn of this tragedy," Marcos said on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
"We stand in grief and solidarity with you, and our prayers go to the families affected by this disaster," he added.
He added the government is prepared to send relief supplies to help with the recovery effort.
"We have faith in the strength and resilience of the Moroccan people to unite and rebuild in the face of such adversity," Marcos Jr. said.
Morocco's interior ministry has revealed that the earthquake has resulted in 2,862 fatalities and 2,562 injuries.
Philippine Ambassador to Morocco Leslie Baja said in a television interview that no Filipinos were reported as casualties, as they sought refuge in the streets during the earthquake.
Baja added that there are approximately 4,600 Filipinos residing in Morocco, and they will work closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to provide assistance.
She also emphasized that the Philippine embassy promptly contacted local coordinators to ensure the well-being of Filipinos in Morocco following the earthquake.
