Singer-songwriter Jose Mari Chan revealed over the weekend that he did not expect his song "Christmas in Our Hearts" to become a hit.

According to Chan, he composed the tune years ago from a poem written by a friend. However, it wasn't until two years later that he decided to use it for a Christmas song.

"I never thought that two years later, I'd use that melody for a Christmas song," Chan said in an interview with Boy Abunda. "I never thought it would be as big as it is now."

"As a matter of fact, the producers of Universal Records said 'it is too Christian a song. Why don't you come up with a romantic Christmas song?'" he recounted.

He said he gave in to their request and wrote "A Perfect Christmas," which the record label people loved.

They were so sure it would receive good radio airplay, the singer said. "They didn't expect 'Christmas in Our Hearts' will become a bigger hit."

"Christmas in Our Hearts" has since become a staple of the Filipino Christmas season.

It has been covered by many artists, including Lea Salonga, who was originally supposed to sing the duet with Chan.

Chan is set to hold a concert tour in Canada in November. He will kick off the tour on 10 November in Vancouver before heading to Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Toronto.

The legendary singer is also working on a new album, which he said will be released in time for the holidays.

In the interview, Chan also spoke about his other iconic songs, such as "Beautiful Girl." He said he was grateful for the success of his music, and he was always looking for new ways to connect with his fans.

"I just want to make music that people can relate to," he said. "I want to make music that brings people joy."
