Lady Bulldogs begin early buildup

National University sets its redemption campaign in motion by preparing early for next year's University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 86 women's volleyball tournament.

Just a couple of weeks following a failed campaign to retain the crown, the Lady Bulldogs are already back in training, looking determined to retake the throne they claimed last year in flawless fashion.

"We have already started training so we'll have a better chance next season," NU star Bella Belen said.

The Season 84 Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player winner tried but came up short of rallying the Lady Bulldogs in the best-of-three finals, losing to De La Salle University in two fiercely fought five-setter games.

It was the second straight championship showdown of the two teams that figured in last year's title series.

NU wants to take advantage of the offseason to sharpen up before embarking on their quest back on top of the country's premier collegiate volleyball competition.

"Right now, we're planning on joining the Shakey's (Super League). So we're preparing for our upcoming league," Belen, who was hailed as the Collegiate Press Corps Volleyball Player of the Year for the athletic year 2021-22, said.

The Lady Bulldogs won the inaugural staging of the SSL last year via tournament sweep including a dominating win over La Salle in the final.

Belen, an incoming third year open spiker, will have her hands full going into next season.

The 20-year old power-hitter will take over as leader of the Lady Bulldogs who have lost three key veterans that have exhausted their playing eligibility.

NU bid goodbye to team captain Ces Robles, main libero Jen Nierva and backup setter Joyme Cagande.

The trio will make their debut in the professional ranks with Chery Tiggo in the Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference slated to begin 29 June.

"I'm really proud of my Ates, especially that they're still teammates in the pro. I think another reason why they decided to stick together is because they have a goal. I'm happy that even though they have offers from different teams they still chose to be together," Belen said.

Aside from Belen, NU will rely on holdovers Alyssa Solomon, Lams Lamina, Vange Alinsug, Erin Pangilinan and Sheena Toring for another shot at the championship.
