Customs agents have seized smuggled glutinous rice in five 20-foot containers at the Port of Cebu on Friday.

Port of Cebu-Bureau of Customs (BOC) Acting District Collector Atty. Charlito Martin Mendoza issued the warrant of seizure and detention (WSD) for the shipment after the customs examiner found that it was misdeclared in violation of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA).

Mendoza in his WSD order addressed to the District Commander of the Enforcement and Security Services-Customs Police Division (ESS-CPD),Port of Cebu,said ” Whereas,during the examination, the assigned Customs Examiner N. Tan together with representatives from members from CREST, representatives from Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), and Philiipine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) found that the shipment contained misdeclared goods, particularly 5×20 container vans containing glutinuous rice.”

The containers were part of a shipment of 10 20-footers vans consigned to Sagetics Enterprises with address at no. 33, Door 5, P. Gomez St., Centro, Mandaue City, Cebu. The customs broker was identified as Mark Desabille Cueva with address at Bausin St., Sitio Chava, Atop Atop, Bantayan island, Cebu. The rice came from Vietnam.

The other vans contain ordinary rice with lesser customs duties and taxes.

Customs sources disclosed that a certain Chinese businessman identified only as “Vincent” wanted to evade paying about P500,000 in duties and taxes, so the shipment was misdeclared.

Customs brokers’ sources disclosed that Vincent has not notified Cueva that there were at least five container vans which contained glutinuous rice..

The shipment will be auctioned off to the public.
