Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go on Monday called on Filipinos and organizers of the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) to unite in making the hosting of the event successful instead of fingerpointing over the mishandling of the lodging and transport of foreign football teams over the weekend.
“It is saddening that some of our countrymen are clapping their hands for the wrong reason, clapping their hands because they want us to fail. Is this the kind of attitude that we want to show our visitors and neighbors? Is this the kind of attitude that we want to leave to our youth? That should not be our attitude today. Let us help each other as support to each Filipino athlete and for our hosting of the Southeast Asian Games to succeed,” Go said in a privilege speech at the Senate.
“The reputation of the country is at stake. This is not a burden of only one group, not only of the government, not only of the PSC (Philippine Sports Commission) or PoC (Philippine Olympic Committee) or PHISGOC (Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee). As Filipinos, all of us are hosts of the Southeast Asian Games so this is the time that we should help each other and not blame each other,” added Go.
Go said that while the tasks of hosting and organizing the SEAG primarily rests of the PSC, PoC and PHISGOC, it doesn’t mean that others should not care.

“Let us not be to each his own,” he said. “The fault of one is the fault of all.”
Go also said there is no reason to be not prepared for hosting the SEAG as the Office of the President and Congress gave the needed funds and support.
He further said that apologizing is not needed now. Instead, everyone should be awakened and working fast.
However, the senator said the time for holding those who should be held accountable will come.
“As the Chair of the Committee on Sports and a member of the Blue Ribbon Committee, we are ready to investigate any mishandling of the hosting of the Southeast Asian Games. But for now, LET US WORK AS ONE IN ORDER TO WIN AS ONE,” he said.
Go’s privilege speech came a day after the football teams of Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand, Timor-Leste complained on social media about being picked up late in the airport and waiting too long to get their hotel rooms.
