The family of rape-slay convict former Caluan, Laguna Mayor Antonio Sanchez has refuted the reported drug charges after alleged shabu was found inside his cell during the Senate inquiry on the implementation of Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) on Tuesday.
In a statement, Calauan councilor Ave Maree Sanchez-Alcid explained that the drug charges – which should impede the granting of time allowances to the former mayor – were not proven.
“In 2006, he was acquitted. The 2010 issue was reported in the news that Mayor Sanchez was in possession of one kilogram of shabu. I have here the affidavit of then Undersecretary Oscar Calderon and then superintendent Armando Miranada that states there’s no shabu,” said Alcid. “They asked, they investigated, There’s no instance, there’s no searching, they did not seize one kilo of shabu inside my father’s cell.”
Senate Blue Ribbon Committee chairman Senator Richard Gordon, meantime, said that they will refer this to the committee but it was found out that the affidavit was not notarized.

Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri asked Bureau of Corrections director-general Nicanor Faeldon on the accusations against Sanchez related to shabu and Faeldon responded that the incident in 2006 was acquitted by the court due to technicalities of the case but for the 2010 incident, he has yet to submit the BuCor’s findings.
Sanchez’ daughter also denied that her father attended a birthday party last July as claimed by various social media accounts and explained that the picture was taken when the former mayor was rushed to the hospital.
