TRAININGS were held for the indigenous technicians from the three communities.

Signify, a world leader in lighting, in partnership with Stiftung Solarenergie donated Philips Solar Indoor System (Philips SIS-30) products to over 170 students of the Green Valley Integrated School (GVIS), enabling the students to still study at home during night time.

The project is committed to provide reliable lighting systems to underprivileged students in the off-grid communities of the province of Sarangani — Green Valley, Datal Bong and Tulad. This initiative is part of Signify’s Project Lighteracy in which the company provides light to support better learning conditions in communities that have little or no access to light.

Access to electricity remains a challenge in many isolated communities across the Philippines. Even after sunset, many people still have to do school work and household chores with dim lights of candles or kerosene lamps, exposing children and families to hazardous fumes and running the risk of getting burned.

“There is an opportunity to improve the people’s way of life in the off-grid communities of Sarangani and with the help of Stiftung Solarenergie, we took action through Signify’s Project Lighteracy,” said Jagan Srinivasan, country leader of Signify Philippines Inc. “The Solar Indoor System used for home lighting will enable the children to read or study and help the communities to continue doing household chores even during nighttime.”

“With the Solar Indoor System, we provide communities with enough power to light three 12 volts/10 Ah light points that also carry a USB port for cellphone charging,” Srinivasan added.

This initiative underlines the company’s purpose to unlock the extraordinary potential of light for brighter lives and a better world. A three-day training was also held for village-based technicians.

A total of 16 indigenous technicians were produced from the three communities.

“We at Signify believe that we can promote enterprise and entrepreneurship in these far-flung communities as we support their learning,” Srinivasan added.

Signify Philippines Inc. continues to call for action to help those whose education and living conditions are compromised due to limited or no access to light.
