Reds should show sincerity Members and supporters of the Communist Party of the Philippines’ armed group the New People’s Army (NPA) unfurl a streamer and shout slogans as they march toward the peace arch for a protest march near Malacanang Palace in Manila. The fifth round of formal peace talks between the government and communist rebels were deferred as a result of a directive from President Rodrigo Duterte who wanted to consult the public on the peace deal. An abandoned cadaver of a New People’s Army (NPA) member was recovered by troops of the 1st Infantry Battalion (1IB) at Sitio Sampaloc, Brgy Bulsa, San Juan, Batangas.
The body, which was later identified as that of alias “Jepoy,” member of Kilusang Larangang Gerilya Silangan (formerly known as Platoon Galaxy), had incurred two fatal gunshot wounds in the chest in an armed encounter against the soldiers last Monday.
According to Brigadier General Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos Jr., Commander of the 202nd Brigade which has operational jurisdiction over the area, the troops were conducting pursuit and tracking operations when they found the corpse.
The troops with K9 tracking dogs followed the bloodstains from the encounter site. After almost two days of tracking, the dogs led them to a rotten cadaver in a grassy area. The body had been dragged one kilometer away from the encounter site. It was covered with dried coconut leaves in an attempt by the NPA to conceal the body.

Meanwhile, the cadaver is now being transported from the site to the municipal police station for proper disposition while waiting for possible claimants.
Aside from previously recovered items including an M16 rifle, backpacks, bandoleers and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) during the firefight, the troops recovered on Thursday additional IED, blasting cap, hand grenade, assorted ammunition, Macbook laptop, cellphones and other subversive documents.
The government troops are continuing massive pursuit operations against the terrorists in an attempt to locate the other wounded NPA member reported by civilians. Checkpoints are also being expanded in the area.
