Chinese President Xi Jinping made it clear to U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis in their meeting in Beijing Wednesday that China will not give up any inch of territory.
“Our stance is steadfast and clear-cut when it comes to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Xi said, according to China’s state media, Xinhua. “Any inch of territory passed down from ancestors can not be lost while we want nothing from others.”
Mattis, the first Pentagon chief to visit China since 2014, met with Xi inside the Great Hall of the People. He also met with his Chinese counterpart, Chinese State Councilor and Minister of National Defense Wei Fenghe, and other top Chinese generals.
The meeting comes as relations between China and the U.S. have been marred by a trade war and sailing of American naval ships in the South China Sea, which Beijing regards as its territory.
