Jimboy Estrada delivered in the clutch as Letran College escaped San Sebastian College, 91-89, in Season 102 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament on Friday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.
With the game tied at 89, Estrada drained a fadeaway jumper with 0.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter to seal the Knights’ third straight victory.
Estrada finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while San Sebastian’s John Ynot failed to connect on a desperation three-point attempt from full court as time expired.
Letran head coach Allen Ricardo said Estrada’s game-winning shot was no surprise as the Knights had practiced the play that got the job done.
“I needed to go to my key player. I mean, we actually practice that,” Ricardo said.
“Without a doubt, when I saw how their defense was set up, I knew their defense would break down against Estrada.”
The Knights also took advantage of San Sebastian’s 18 turnovers, converting them into 19 points.
Chad Gammad led Letran with 23 points, while Buensalida added 21 points and six rebounds as the Knights improved to a 7-3 win-loss record in Group B.
Caesleyh Bacani’s 24-point effort went to waste as the Stags remained winless after 10 games.
