GERMAN DEFENSE FIRMS EYE PHL

German defense and technology companies are exploring opportunities in the Philippines as Manila seeks to strengthen its military capabilities amid growing security challenges.
The German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry brought together about 80 business executives, government representatives and security experts for a conference at Makati Diamond Residences on 6 October.
Organized with The Defense Expo PHL and Stratbase, the gathering focused on potential partnerships in surveillance, intelligence, military technology and defense modernization.
German Ambassador Andreas Pfaffernoschke said cooperation should extend beyond purchasing military equipment to include personnel training, maintenance, technological integration and maritime monitoring.
German Defense Attache Commander Michael Radtke identified drones, counter-drone systems, airborne surveillance and force protection as areas where German companies could support the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
The discussions come as the Philippines pursues its Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept and efforts to develop a more self-reliant defense industry.
Stratbase CEO Rupert Paul Manhit cautioned that foreign companies must navigate Philippine regulations and establish credible local partnerships rather than simply sell equipment.
The conference formed part of a German government-backed business mission aimed at expanding commercial ties in the security and defense sectors.
No contracts or procurement agreements were announced at the gathering.
