Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) officials announced Monday that the agency will conduct a feasibility study on establishing a dedicated bus route parallel to Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) to ease overcrowding on the eastern transit corridor.

The proposed bus service would operate along the route stretching from Antipolo City to Recto Avenue in Manila, offering an alternative transit option for commuters traveling between Rizal province and the capital.

“The initial information that we have is the significant increase of passengers of the LRT-2, especially during rush hours in the morning and the afternoon,” LTFRB acting chairperson Greg Pua said.

“Our goal is to come up with new routes that will serve as an alternative mode of transportation for the passengers,” he added.

LRT Line 2, which has operated for 27 years, is undergoing system upgrades that have reduced operational train sets, resulting in extended headways and platform congestion at key stations.

The project models the existing EDSA Busway system, which runs parallel to Metro Rail Transit Line 3 and portions of LRT Line 1.
