Beyond ‘Anak ni Tamayo’
While cooking in the NBA became a defining chapter, Tamayo’s journey was never solely about how far he could go. It was also about figuring out who he was outside the identity he inherited.
Being a Tamayo came with pride, history and the deep influence of his parents. But at a certain point, he realized he needed to establish a name of his own.
“I’m not saying I wasn’t proud to be a Tamayo,” he said. “But I wanted my own identity. I wanted to be more than anak ni Tamayo [Tamayo’s child].”
That desire drove him to leave home. He needed distance to grow, test himself, and discover what kind of chef he could become on his own terms. Eventually, that path brought him back.
“That’s why I left, and that’s why I’m back,” he said. “I feel like I validated myself. I’m a kid from a karinderia who became a chef for NBA players. I’m really happy and thankful that it happened. But now that I have validated my skills, it’s time for me to go back and highlight them from within the Philippines.”
Coming home through food
That sense of return is at the heart of Textures by Tamayo in Tagaytay City.
Housed in what was once the Tamayo family’s vacation home, the restaurant transforms a deeply personal space into one where guests can gather around a table. It serves as both a restaurant and a homecoming — a continuation of the family story through food.
Building the restaurant in a location filled with childhood memories was a deliberate choice. The menu draws from the food and experiences that shaped Tamayo, while his years abroad inform the techniques and perspective he brings to the plate.
“The menu is actually reflected in my entire childhood,” Tamayo shared during the restaurant’s launch. “I wanted to give respect to my parents and their legacy.”
Today, he no longer feels caught between honoring his family name and establishing his own career.
“I’m prouder than ever that my parents trained me to be who I am today,” Tamayo said. “At the same time, I now have the confidence to say I have the skills. I’m also Chef Christopher Tamayo.”
