Twelve public schools in Pakil, Laguna can better deal with class disruptions caused by inclement weather with the internet access they expect to receive under the adopt-a-school ICT program of Prime Infra Foundation (PIF) and Ahunan Power Inc. (API), a hydroelectric power plant operator in the province.

Cornelio C. Dalena Elementary School (CCDES), Pakil Elementary School, Pakil Senior High School, Banilan Elementary School, Kabulusan Elementary School, Kabulusan Integrated National High School Main, Poblacion, and Saray Extensions, Casa Real Elementary School, Casinsin Elementary School, Matikiw Elementary School, and Maulawin Elementary School are the designated recipients of free internet to be rolled out under a memorandum of agreement (MoA) signed by officials of the Department of Education (DepEd), PIF and API last 23 September 2026.

DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara witnessed DepEd Region IV-A regional director Carlito Rocafort, PIF executive director Donato Almeda, and API president and CEO Noel Gonzales sign the MoA and participated in the ceremonial launching the project at the CCDES.

Angara said reliable connectivity can help schools and students remain resilient amid frequent class disruptions caused by severe weather.

“This is life-changing for our students and teachers, especially this calamity season. The Education Commission mentioned the record number of days that out learners miss, as much as 40 to 50 days in some of our school divisions,” the DepEd secretary said. “Our students, our teachers, and our community will be more motivated,” he added.

The internet access will also expand students’ access to digital tools and learning opportunities, while equipping them and their teachers with resources that can support innovation in education.

“This initiative is not just about technology. It’s about resilience, ensuring our schools remain connected and capable even during disruptions. It is about opportunity, opening doors for students and teachers to access global knowledge, innovative platforms, and modern teaching methods,” Almeda said.

“We always say that the future lies in the hands of our youth. And today, as we celebrate this initiative, we are putting that belief into action. By giving better access to the tools, knowledge, and opportunities they need to build that future,” he added.

Under the MOA, API will cover the monthly internet subscription fees for three years. The schools will also receive orientation and technical guidance on the proper use and maintenance.

The initiative forms part of API’s Tayo Na Pakil community engagement program focused on education, environment, heritage, and health and wellness.

On education, the company supports close to 2,500 students, teachers, and members of the school community on average each year through programs ranging from annual Brigada Eskwela activities, learning equipment, repairs and maintenance, and solar electrification to improved water and sanitation facilities, nutrition and wellness programs, teacher scholarships, youth development initiatives, and support for school disaster preparedness.

Pakil Mayor Ronald Hidalgo and DepEd Schools Division of Laguna assistant division superintendent Buddy Repia also took part in the event.
