SANAA — Yemen’s Houthis said Saudi Arabia launched more than 50 airstrikes against their positions within 24 hours after the Iran-backed group claimed a drone and missile attack on a Saudi military base.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said “the criminal Saudi enemy has carried out 58 airstrikes in the past 24 hours.”

The group’s Almasirah TV reported Saudi strikes in Saada and the northern Al-Jawf province, along with artillery fire near the Saudi border.

The Houthis have reported more than 100 strikes since Tuesday, although Riyadh has not confirmed the attacks.

The escalation follows the Houthis’ heaviest missile and drone attack on Saudi Arabia in years, which set oil facilities ablaze and wounded 73 people.

On Sunday, the Houthis said they also targeted the Sharurah military base in southern Saudi Arabia with drones and missiles.

The renewed fighting comes after the Houthis captured Yemen’s Red Sea coast, strengthening their hold over the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, a key route for Saudi oil exports.
