RIYADH (AFP) — Strikes by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels wounded 73 people in Saudi Arabia, a Riyadh-led coalition said Tuesday, vowing to respond.

Houthi media said the rebels targeted Abha International Airport, King Khalid Air Base, and facilities belonging to state oil giant Aramco in Abha and Jizan.

The coalition said the attacks targeted civilian and economic sites and wounded 73 civilians.

“The Command will also take all necessary measures and actions to respond to the sources of the threat and neutralise its danger,” it said.

The strikes followed Houthi accusations that Saudi Arabia carried out attacks across Yemen, including a bombardment of a prison in Al-Hazm that killed 11 people and left 20 inmates missing.

More than 300 people have been killed in days of fighting near Yemen’s Red Sea coast as the Houthis push toward the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The waterway is a key shipping route and has become increasingly important for Saudi oil exports amid Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Fighting between the Houthis and Yemen’s internationally recognized government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, reignited in July after several years of relative calm.
