The people of Mindanao have waited long enough for a government that genuinely represents their hopes and aspirations.
Yesterday was the first parliamentary election in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). I view it as a historic moment and a critical leap toward self-determination, peace, and democratic stability for the Bangsamoro people.
A total of 2,393,202 registered voters were expected to exercise their right to choose their leaders freely. This high number of registered voters indicates strong interest in the electoral process. I have friends in the BARMM, and whenever we have a chance to meet, I feel their sincerity and commitment to improving the lives of the people in the region.
The newly formed Parliament’s structure, consisting of representatives of various sectors and political parties, reflects an important effort to ensure diverse representation and inclusivity.
With 40 regional political party representatives, 32 district representatives, and eight sectoral representatives, this could build stronger, more resilient governance structures that will serve the region’s distinct needs.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called for the voters to exercise “wisdom, dignity, and respect for one another.” He reminded them of their power to shape BARMM’s future by selecting representatives who will form the first democratically elected Parliament.
Elections are an opportunity to engage in a collective act of vision-building for a region long marred by conflict and instability.
The shift from the interim Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) to a fully functioning regional government is a significant achievement in the peace process, pursued without further violence.
This transition marks a move away from a difficult past, paving the way for a future where the voices of the Bangsamoro people are recognized and respected.
The BARMM can serve as a model for other regions struggling with issues of governance and identity. By choosing visionary leaders committed not just to their own political agendas but to the collective welfare of their constituents, voters can pave the way for a Bangsamoro that reflects the aspirations of its people — a place that is not only a home but also a cornerstone of progress for the entire nation.
The success of these elections hinges not only on the voter turnout but also on each individual’s commitment to safeguard this vital democratic exercise. Every vote cast will help identify good leaders who can strengthen Bangsamoro institutions.
Voters can help build a regional government that aligns with their aspirations by electing visionary leaders who prioritize their constituents’ collective welfare over personal political agendas. The electorate deserves representatives who will advocate for unity, social justice, and healing, rather than division and hostility.
