PARIS (AFP) — France submitted a revised proposal Monday to ban children under 15 from social media after its previous legislation was struck down by the country’s top constitutional authority.
President Emmanuel Macron said the government had notified the European Commission of the new draft following “rigorous technical work.”
The notification is required to ensure the proposal complies with European Union law.
France’s Constitutional Council struck down the previous legislation in August, ruling that part of the measure unnecessarily infringed on freedom of expression.
Macron has made restricting social media access for children and teenagers a priority and wants a ban in place before leaving office next year.
He has also called for similar restrictions across the European Union.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to address a possible EU-wide social media ban for children in Brussels this week.
Several countries have moved to restrict children’s access to social media amid growing concerns about its effects on young people.
