    • Martin Romualdez

Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez’s arrest over a plunder case tied to alleged anomalies in flood control projects may have closed one chapter of the controversy, but it could also open a far more consequential one.

Romualdez was served a warrant of arrest on Monday, 7 September, while confined at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City. The case stems from allegations involving billions of pesos in kickbacks from flood control and infrastructure projects.

The arrest has fueled the government’s narrative that accountability applies even to the politically powerful. But questions remain over whether the legal action against Romualdez and other accused officials will be enough to address the broader flood control controversy.

Former Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co, who previously chaired the House Appropriations Committee, remains at large, while two other co-accused are also facing arrest warrants.

The bigger question now is what Romualdez will do with the lines drawn around him.

Will he take one for the team -- or will he finally talk?

If Romualdez decides to break his silence, what does he know that has yet to come to light? Could his account shed light on who allegedly orchestrated and benefited from the flood control and budget controversies?

And perhaps most importantly: How far could the fallout reach?

For now, the arrest may mark the beginning of accountability. But what comes next could prove even more explosive.

Watch out for the full analysis tomorrow, only in DAILY TRIBUNE.
