    • Localized Peace Engagement

Worn down by hardship and fading support, a rebel couple surrenders.

A married couple who served as members of the Sub-Regional Committee Sesame under the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee has surrendered to government forces, marking another success for the Localized Peace Engagement program in the region, the Philippine Army’s 8th Infantry Division (8ID) reported Saturday.

The couple, identified as “Aga” and “Bigo,” laid down their arms and expressed relief at returning to civilian life after years inside the underground movement.

Bigo said life in the movement had become increasingly difficult, citing the constant pressure of evading government forces, nonstop walking and hiding, and the fear of being killed and leaving their children without parents.

Aga echoed his sentiments, saying even basic necessities such as food had become difficult to obtain. The loss of their arms cache further weakened their ability to continue fighting.

Both also cited the movement’s declining support among local communities as a major reason for their decision to leave.

“The most important reason we decided to leave was the gradual loss of support for the movement among the very communities we claimed to serve and represent. People in these areas have become more aware of our methods and tactics, resulting in the continued loss of support from the masses,” Bigo said.

Without the cover, supplies and community support that the movement once relied on, the couple found themselves increasingly isolated.

That isolation, coupled with the constant threat of death and difficulty securing basic necessities, ultimately pushed Aga and Bigo to choose surrender over continuing the armed struggle.

“I want to live a normal life with my family. All I want now is to be with my children and watch them grow up — something I was unable to do while I was in the mountains,” Aga said.

The 8ID said the couple’s surrender reflects the shrinking influence of the armed group in Eastern Visayas, citing sustained cooperation among communities and local government units.
