The golden years are taking on a new shade as today’s seniors remain active, independent and economically engaged.

The future of the economy may have more silver in it.
Across the world, older adults are emerging as a growing economic force, creating what experts call the “silver economy,” a market shaped by the needs, choices and purchasing power of senior citizens.
In the Philippines, this shift is becoming more visible as more Filipinos aged 60 and above remain active in society. Beyond retirement, many seniors continue working, managing businesses, supporting their families, traveling, pursuing personal interests and making independent financial decisions.
Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority show that seniors aged 60 and above now account for nearly 10 percent of the country’s population. In 2025, around 3.4 million seniors remained part of the labor force.
As the senior population grows, businesses and financial institutions are recognizing the importance of creating products and services that address their changing lifestyles — from convenience and accessibility to financial security.
BDO Prime Savers, a savings account designed for clients aged 60 and above, offers banking features tailored to the needs of today’s seniors. These include priority service at branches, preferential foreign exchange rates for travel or financial support for loved ones abroad, and the convenience of opening an account online.
The bank is also marking Grandparents’ Month with incentives for eligible clients. From 1 to 30 September, those who open a Prime Savers peso account with an initial deposit of at least P100,000 or a Prime Savers Dollar account with at least US$2,000 may receive a P500 SM Gift Pass.
Clients who open qualified peso accounts may also join BDO’s 50th Anniversary raffle, giving them chances to win hybrid vehicles and SM Gift Passes until December 2026. Account holders can earn raffle entries by registering online once and maintaining the required balance.
The growth of the silver economy highlights a changing perception of aging. Today’s seniors are not simply recipients of care —they are active participants in their families, communities and the economy.
As grandparents continue to build memories, pursue goals and share their experiences with future generations, financial solutions that support their independence can help them make the most of the years ahead.
