Hair loss can feel like one of those things you don’t really think about — until you start noticing more strands on your pillow, in the shower drain or stuck to your brush.
And while genetics are often blamed, sudden shedding can actually be triggered by stress, fatigue, postpartum changes and even seasonal shifts.
This type of temporary shedding is known as reactive hair loss, and it typically lasts less than three months. But according to new 2026 research from Phyto Paris, there’s more happening beneath the surface than we might realize.
Phyto Paris’ research identified two major factors that can contribute to reactive hair loss: oxidative stress and psychological stress.
Oxidative stress can come from everyday environmental exposure, including UV rays, pollution and seasonal changes. Meanwhile, psychological stress can be linked to emotional pressure, lack of sleep and postpartum changes.
Basically, your hair can feel the effects of everything your body is going through.
These stressors may cause hair follicles to prematurely enter the catagen phase, the transitional stage of the hair cycle. When this happens earlier than it should, the hair can begin shedding sooner.
To address these mechanisms, PHYTO Paris developed the PhytoPhanère Anti-Reactive Hair Loss Treatment, a botanical formula designed to target the stress-related factors involved in premature shedding.
The treatment features concentrated, patented botanical ingredients, including houseleek extract, which helps activate NRF-2, a key regulator of the body’s cellular defense against oxidative stress. A patented self-heal extract helps regulate cortisol, while pea sprout extract supports the hair cycle and rosemary extract helps maintain a healthy scalp environment.
So, how much hair loss is normal?
According to dermatologist Dr. Coreen Copuyoc, some daily shedding is completely normal.
“Basically, normal hair shedding can be up to 50 to 100 strands of hair,” she told DAILY TRIBUNE.
That might sound like a lot, but seeing a few strands come out every day doesn’t automatically mean you’re experiencing hair loss. What matters is noticing changes in your usual pattern.
If your shedding suddenly becomes much heavier, your hair starts looking noticeably thinner, or you see other changes in your scalp or hair, that’s when it’s worth paying closer attention.

One of the biggest misconceptions about hair loss is that it’s purely cosmetic.
But Dr. Copuyoc points out that hair changes can sometimes reflect what’s happening with your overall well-being.
She said, “It can be an emotional deficiency or it can be a stress that’s eating at your psyche, or it’s like your mental health that’s already affecting your hair loss.”
And yes, the emotional impact can go both ways. Hair loss itself can affect confidence, especially when shedding becomes noticeable or severe.
Her advice? Don’t simply ignore it and hope it goes away, “I think the first thing they should do is to see a consultant or a certified dermatologist.”
Your rebonding era doesn’t have to end
For Filipinos, hair treatments are practically part of the culture. Rebonding, coloring, bleaching and straightening — we love experimenting with our hair.
But all that styling can take a toll when done too frequently or without proper care.
Dr. Copuyoc says the answer isn’t necessarily to stop doing these treatments altogether. Instead, it’s about finding balance.
“It’s more about telling them how to achieve balance and support by, of course, proper timing, if you want to rebond your hair, and then going to the right people to do it, that use the right product that’s not too harmful to the scalp, and then taking breaks.”
Building a healthier routine
A good hair routine doesn’t have to be complicated.
According to Dr. Copuyoc, the basics are simple: Use a cleanser suited to your hair and scalp, choose a conditioner based on your hair type, and add hydration when needed.
Your routine should also fit your lifestyle. If you regularly use styling products, for example, you may need to cleanse your hair more frequently.
How you wear your hair matters, too.
“You have to give your hair a break, and give it time to recover whenever you’re doing it.”
That means avoiding overly tight hairstyles, taking breaks from frequent styling and letting your hair dry naturally when possible.
Healthy hair care isn’t about having a 10-step routine — it’s about consistency, balance and giving your hair and scalp time to recover.
Hair shedding is normal. Sudden or dramatic changes, however, shouldn’t automatically be dismissed.
And while a few strands on your brush are nothing to panic over, persistent or noticeable shedding is a good reason to check in with a dermatologist.
