Jonvic seeks home gun checks

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Thursday proposed amending agency rules to allow law enforcement agencies to inspect how lawfully issued firearms are kept in homes.
Remulla cited recent school shootings involving firearms taken from family members, including weapons owned by uniformed personnel responsible for their safekeeping.
He said investigations found the firearms unsecured and within children’s reach.
Remulla urged lawmakers to amend the Internal Rules and Regulations of the firearms law to allow the Philippine National Police to inspect gun storage, saying gun ownership is a privilege granted by law, not a constitutional right.
House Committee on Public Order and Safety chair Rolan Valeriano said he would discuss the proposal after budget deliberations.
Critics scored Remulla’s proposal as “an invasion of privacy.”
