The recent ash emissions of Mount Kanlaon have led two barangays in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, to experience light ashfall on Monday.
The Kanlaon Volcano Observatory (KVO) of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the volcano generated three ash emissions from Monday morning to afternoon, with light ashfall reaching two barangays in Canlaon City.
“Light ashfalls [were] reported at Barangay Masulog and Pula in Canlaon City,” KVO resident volcanologist Mari-Andylene Quintia told DAILY TRIBUNE in a Viber interview on Monday.
Kanlaon recorded its first ash emission at 5:51 a.m. with a 360 minutes or six hours duration, during which the plume rose 200 meters and drifted eastward.
The second ash emission was recorded at 12:01 p.m. spanning only 23 minutes, while the third emission occurred at 12:52 p.m. and lasted 87 minutes.
Similar to the first emission, all three ash emissions generated grayish plumes that rose approximately 200 meters and drifted eastward.
The state volcanology institute maintained Alert Level 2 over Kanlaon and prohibited entry into the volcano's four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).
The City Government of Canlaon in Negros Oriental issued Executive Order No. 80, Series of 2026, mandating the suspension of classes at all levels in both public and private schools within the city, effective Monday, August 24, at 12 p.m.
The class suspension was ordered due to the recorded ashfall from Kanlaon Volcano. The suspension covers all face-to-face classes and other school-related activities requiring the physical presence of students within the city.
The executive order stated that all school heads, teachers, and personnel are directed to ensure the orderly dismissal and safe return of students. Parents were likewise advised to ensure the safety of their children and monitor official government advisories.
The Canlaon City Government noted that the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO), in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd) and other concerned agencies, shall continuously monitor the situation at Kanlaon Volcano.
