CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Government security forces on Friday recovered a concealed cache containing a high-powered firearm, ammunition, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and medical supplies during an intelligence-driven operation in Barangay Tagbobonga, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.
Military reports said the operation, conducted under OPLAN 21-2026 “MUSTANG 08,” was carried out by personnel from the PNP Regional Mobile Force Battalion 13, PNP Special Action Force units, Regional Intelligence Unit 13, and the Philippine Army’s 67th Infantry Battalion.
Acting on information voluntarily provided by a former rebel, security forces launched a focused scouring operation that led to the discovery of the hidden arms cache.
Recovered items included one AK-47 rifle with a defaced serial number, three magazines, 102 rounds of ammunition, four Clamor-type anti-personnel IEDs, and assorted medical and surgical supplies.
Authorities secured the recovered firearm, ammunition, and other materials for documentation and proper disposition, while EOD/K9 personnel took custody of the IEDs for examination and safe handling.
Security officials described the recovery as a significant accomplishment resulting from intelligence-led operations and strong police-military coordination. They emphasized that the operation prevented armed threat groups from accessing additional weapons and explosives while highlighting the valuable role of former rebels in supporting peace and security efforts across the region.
