PANGASINAN — A Philippine scops owl was found and rescued in Barangay Inerangan, Alaminos City, Pangasinan after local resident Carla Rarang reported its presence to the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO).
Upon receiving the report, personnel from the agency responded to the location to secure the bird.
The owl was transported to the Alaminos City Veterinary Office (CVO) for a medical examination to evaluate its overall health. After the health assessment, the bird was turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRo) in Western Pangasinan for care and long-term protection.
The Philippine scops owl is a small nocturnal bird native to lowland forests throughout the country. It typically measures around twenty centimeters in length, featuring brownish plumage with dark streaks that provide camouflage against tree bark. The species feeds primarily on insects and small invertebrates, using prominent ear tufts and large forward-facing eyes to hunt at night.
Authorities remind the public not to capture, harm, or disturb wild animals encountered in residential areas. Sightings of wildlife should be reported immediately to the nearest office of the environmental department or local natural resources office to ensure proper handling and safety.
