  • Long-term infrastructure investments and continuous maintenance helped limit power disruptions across the Meralco franchise area during recent heavy rains and flooding, company officials said.

While severe weather frequently leads to widespread electrical outages, utility representatives noted that the limited extent and brief duration of recent service interruptions demonstrate the strength of the grid.

"Resilience is not built during a storm," said Joe Zaldariaga, Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications. "It is built through years of investment, regular maintenance and continuous strengthening of facilities."

Company crews deployed across affected regions to address damaged facilities despite persistent rainfall, rising floodwaters and hazardous ground conditions.

Zaldariaga stressed that the brief nature of the outages should be viewed in the context of the severe weather conditions.

Speed of restoration remains secondary to safety concerns, according to the utility. Crews often navigate flooded roadways, fallen trees, downed utility poles and unstable structures before repairs can begin.

"Restoration must be as fast as possible but never at the expense of worker and public safety," Zaldariaga said. "The limited impact also reflects investment made before the weather arrived. Regular inspection, preventive maintenance, replacement of aging facilities and vegetation management help reduce both the likelihood and the duration of outages."

When service interruptions are resolved within a few hours during prolonged rain and flooding, it indicates the network can withstand significant stress and that emergency recovery protocols are operating effectively, company officials cited.

Meralco advised the public to keep a safe distance from downed wires, damaged poles and flooded electrical equipment, and urged customers to report hazards immediately to assist dispatch teams in prioritizing repairs.
