  • Veteran guard Scottie Thompson is not expecting an automatic spot back in the Gilas Pilipinas roster after a long layoff due to a hamstring injury.

But if given the opportunity, he’s willing to don the national colors once again for the coming 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier fourth window and the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

“If given a chance, why not?” Thompson said.

“Of course, I’m always here, willing to help anything for the national team,” added the 33-year-old Barangay Ginebra star.

Thompson’s return to active duty for the Kings — albeit in an 88-97 loss to Meralco in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Governors’ Cup — was his way of getting back into competitive form.

The former PBA Most Valuable Player played for the first time since helping Ginebra capture the Commissioner’s Cup crown at the expense of dethroned TNT in a thrilling Game 7 last 17 June.

Thompson skipped Gilas’ World Cup Qualifier third window road games against New Zealand and Australia last month.

“I have to get into game condition and get in shape. Who knows, it could also be a preparation for Gilas,” he said.

“This is a big thing for me as part of my preparation for the practices with Gilas,” Thompson added.

However, Thompson was still far from his top shape, shooting 1-of-6 from the field to finish with four points, six rebounds and five assists.

    Gilas begins its training today.

Thompson’s return will give head coach Tim Cone added depth as well as a reliable backcourt defender.

The Philippine team will host Jordan on 28 August before facing Iran two days later at the Mall of Asia Arena.

After that, an all-PBA Gilas squad will fly to South Korea on 3 September for a training camp and a pair of friendlies against the Korean national team before heading to Nagoya for the Asiad.

Gilas is in Pool C with Bahrain, Kazakhstan and China, which the Pinoy cagers beat in a 77-76 semifinal escape in the Hangzhou Asiad three years ago before shooting down Jordan in the finale to end a 61-year gold medal drought.
