Police arrested a 33-year-old caregiver for allegedly stealing nearly P594,000 in cash and jewelry from a 77-year-old person with a disability in Makati City, authorities said.
The suspect, identified by police under the alias “Sophia,” a resident of Pasig City, allegedly stole P294,787 in cash and gold jewelry valued at approximately P300,000 from her employer.
Investigating officers said the theft was discovered around 7 a.m. Wednesday when the victim found his cash and jewelry missing from a bag in his room. The stolen items had been replaced with cut blank white paper sealed inside an envelope with tape.
The victim’s son filed a complaint with the Makati City Police Station, leading to the caregiver’s arrest around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday.
According to police, the suspect admitted her involvement during questioning, returned P15,000 via a mobile transaction, and surrendered her mobile phone. The remaining cash and jewelry have not been recovered.
The suspect remains in police custody as authorities prepare to file charges of qualified theft before the city prosecutor’s office.
